What you need to know when travelling

Travelling to/from UK

Since 1 January 2021, with the end of the transition period following the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union, there have been some changes regarding travelling between Portugal and the United Kingdom.

This information is not binding. We recommend checking the legislation in force or official websites.

1. Passengers travelling from the United Kingdom to Portugal

 What documents do I need?

People from the UK will have to travel with a passport valid for at least ten years on the date of entry into Portugal and valid until at least three months after the date of departure from the country.

Tourists do not need visas for stays of up to 90 days during a period of six months.

Passport controls on arrival at Portugal may take up more time, as the passport will have to be stamped and there are additional questions that may be asked by the border control officers.

 Travelling with pets

In order to travel with pets, people from the UK will have to get their pet passport at least four months in advance.

The airline you are travelling with should confirm if they accept pets and how many you can take if you have more than one. Apart from having a microchip, pets also need a rabies vaccination and an Animal Health Certificate – AHC.

 Baggage

Baggage belonging to passengers coming from the United Kingdom may be submitted to physical customs controls.

The European Union has restrictions on the entry of products of plant and animal origin. You can check the information on exceptions and limits here.

Plant products may not be brought into the country without the appropriate phytosanitary certificate. More detailed information here.

 Shopping and VAT refunds

UK residents may now get VAT refunds on purchases made in Portugal. Find out how to do this here.

Considering that products in Portugal are 5 to 10% cheaper than in the United Kingdom on average, the additional advantage of Tax Free shopping will be a very important attraction for UK tourists.

There have also been restrictions on the limits of tax free goods taken to the United Kingdom since 1 January 2021. More information here.

 Healthcare

The European Health Insurance Card will still be accepted until it has expired.

Although travel insurance should be considered, healthcare services are available at fixed prices to tourists visiting Portugal through the Portugal Health Passport. More information here.

 Driving in Portugal

Driving licences issued in the United Kingdom are valid in Portugal for a maximum period of 185 days.

 Using mobile phones

The roaming guarantee has ended. The amount to be paid for calls, text messages and mobile data when you travel to Portugal should be confirmed with your operator.

2. Passengers travelling from Portugal to the United Kingdom

 What documents do I need?

From 2 April 2025, Portuguese citizens will have to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to travel to the UK.

In addition to the ETA, a passport is required, which must remain valid for the duration of the stay. Visas are not required for short visits of up to six months.

More information:

 Travelling with pets

The airline you are travelling with should confirm if they accept pets and how many you can take if you have more than one. Apart from having a microchip, pets also need a rabies vaccination and an Animal Health Certificate – AHC, which can be used up to four months after issue.

To avoid a period of quarantine, you should ensure that your pet meets the requirements of the Pet Travel Scheme.

 Baggage

Passengers travelling to the United Kingdom may carry a certain amount of items without paying taxes. The goods acquired must be for own consumption or gifts.

For further information on the maximum quantities of alcohol and tobacco that may be transported tax free, check here

The United Kingdom does not permit products of animal origin (meat, milk and derived products) or plant products (seeds, plants, fruit, vegetables, flowers, etc.) from European Union countries to be brought into the country, but there are exceptions provided certain requirements are met. You can check the rules for bringing in food and plants here.

Passengers travelling from Portugal to the United Kingdom with more than £10,000 in cash need to fill in a declaration on arrival. This can also be done online here.

Travelling with children

Turn every trip into a fun adventure

Taking children on a plane trip does not have to be a difficult endeavour. You just have to prepare and anticipate trickier situations, so that everything runs smoothly and all of you have fun. Follow our suggestions and enjoy your trip.

Download the document with tips for traveling with children.

Download
  • I'm about to purchase a trip. Any tips?

When making your reservation, inform your airline or travel agent that you will be travelling with children. They may give you a few suggestions, such as booking an overnight flight, so that children maintain their regular sleep cycle, or booking window seats.

  • Which documents are required?

Children must have their own Citizen's Card/Identity Card and Passport, if applicable, always at hand.

Note that, when validating the age of all children under two years, their birth certificate, may not be accepted by the airline, as it does not include a photo.

Once at the airport, remember that all children (even those travelling on your lap, without seat reservation) must have a boarding pass.

Also take into account that a 7-day old child travelling with TAP must be cleared by a physician appointed by TAP (clearance from the child's regular physician is not sufficient). This procedure may differ for other companies.

In such situation, keep in mind that the airline's authority prevails, and your child may be refused boarding.

  • The child is not accompanied by the parents. Is any extra documentation required?

    Yes. More information here.

  • What do I need to do before travelling?

A few days before boarding, explain to your children what they need to do and what they will go through before getting to the plane. Explain this in a positive way, so they do not feel any fear or discomfort, but highlight that it is important that they remain close to you.

Air travel can be stressful for kids, particularly in the case of long-haul flights. The dry air and low atmospheric pressure in the cabin can cause anxiety, and the lack of space to play can also cause irritability.

In order to make sure everything is ready for the trip, visit the paediatrician. This way you can be sure that your children are feeling well and/or have the necessary vaccines for the trip.

If a child is ill, for example, with chickenpox or measles, you are obliged to inform the airline prior to your trip, in order to know the acceptance conditions.

Bring chewing gum and hard candy, which may be necessary to relieve ear pain.

Make sure the children remain hydrated. The most advisable beverages, other than water, are fruit juices or tea. Avoid carbonated drinks, as these have a diuretic effect. If you need to transport liquids as cabin baggage, please be aware of the restrictions applicable.

  • We have arrived at the airport. What now?

The airport is a vast space, with lots of people circulating. Your main focus should be on keeping your children near you and ensuring that they are acclimated and at ease.

    A few suggestions:

    - Bring suitable clothing to mitigate temperature differences between the airport, the plane and your destination.

    - Arrive early, so you can handle everything without haste. Be at the airport two hours earlier for domestic and European flights, and three hours earlier for intercontinental flights.

    - Normally, passengers with children are allowed to board first. For this to happen, you must get to the gate before boarding starts.

    - Never leave your children unattended, even to go to the bathroom. If you lose sight of your children, ask a staff member for help.

    - At the airport there are several entertainment options for children, including watching the planes land and take off. Keep them active, so they will be quieter and calm during the flight.

    - If you require a pushchair right until boarding, the airline will check it in at the gate, and put it in the cargo hold. It will be returned to you once you arrive at your destination. Please note that most airlines are not liable for any damages occurring before check-in.

    - All passengers must go through the X-ray scanning, including children. Only infants may go through with their parents. Remember that hand baggage must also pass through the security checkpoint. To find out what you may carry with you, see the page with information concerning hand baggage.

    - If the child is in a pushchair, put them on your lap instead, and before passing the pushchair through the X-ray, remove all the equipment and items from all bags and place them in the appropriate trays for inspection.

  • I am travelling with a child who requires special care. What should I know?

Ensuring the well-being and tranquility of children with special needs is crucial. Therefore:

    - Inform the security officer of the existence of any special medical devices. Present the respective medical certificate or other document.

    - If you think your child may be uncomfortable during security check, talk to them and help them find the best way to minimise stress.

    - Never leave your child alone during the inspection procedure, even when a specific inspection is necessary.

    - The adult travelling with a child in a special device is the only person that is allowed to remove them from such device for inspection.

    - If your child cannot walk or stand, the security officer shall perform the inspection while the child remains in the device.

The airport provides the Myway service for passengers with reduced mobility.

When booking, inform your airline of any special assistance service you may require, and the airline will notify the airport. For more information about the MyWay service, see the respective information page.

  • Finally on board!

During the flight, it is important that children remain calm, entertained and safe. For full comfort on board, follow our suggestions:

    - Ask a member of the cabin crew to watch your child if you need to go to the bathroom.

    - For added comfort, have your child take off their shoes, as their feet may swell due to the high altitude.

    - Keep your child occupied during the flight. Bring the child's own toys or ask the airline if they will provide some.

    - If your child is using an electronic game, turn off the sound and make sure they are not using it during take-off and landing.

    - Once at your destination, wait for other passengers to exit the plane so that you can collect your baggage more comfortably.

Using the phone, inform the MyWay service of your arrival, for personal and baggage assistance services at check-in, security checkpoint, border and boarding, all the way to your seat on the aircraft, where the airport's responsibility ends.

  • And what kind of assistance can I get when arriving or waiting for a connecting flight at the airport?

When disembarking, the airline or travel agent will notify the MyWay service. All the necessary personal and baggage assistance shall be provided from your seat on the aircraft to the next point of departure.

  • Is the MyWay service properly identified at the airport?

Yes. At the airport, you will find signage directing you to the MyWay service contact points, which identify all and any resources or mechanisms available for people with reduced mobility.

See below where to find this service:

  • Are there special parking spaces for people with reduced mobility?

Yes. Private vehicles bearing the reduced mobility sign have parking available in all of the airport's parks. The designated parking spaces, located near the exits are properly identified.

  • Are guide dogs allowed into the airport?

Yes. Guide dogs are allowed to circulate around the airport, including in boarding terminals. However, you should contact your airline or travel agent to confirm that guide dogs are allowed on the aircraft.

  • Are passengers with reduced mobility also protected?

Yes, passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility are protected against discrimination and, under certain conditions, benefit from the appropriate assistance at all EU airports. See our page on passenger rights to learn more.

What you need to know when travelling

Passenger rights

It is your duty to know your rights.

Your rights as an air passenger are protected by the European Union whenever you have a confirmed reservation and check in within the deadline established for your flight.

On this page, we present a summary of the situations in which you are protected, so that, in case of need, you know what to do.

  • I was denied boarding due to overbooking of the flight.

In case of overbooking, airlines are obliged to ask passengers to voluntarily abdicate their reservation, offering a full refund or re-booking.

When passengers choose re-booking, airlines must provide all the necessary support, such as: food, telephone access and, if necessary, an overnight stay and appropriate transportation to or from the airport.

In case of re-booking, you may also be entitled to a monetary compensation between 125 and 600 euros, depending on flight distance and delay time.

  • My flight is very late, can I ask the airline for support?

Yes. The support you are entitled to depends on the delay time and what your destination is. You may ask your airline to use a phone line and to be provided with food, transportation or accommodation, in the following cases:

    - your flight is delayed by two hours or more, and the distance is 1500 km or less;
    - your flight was delayed by three hours or more, and your destination is within or outside the European Union, at a distance between 1500 and 3500 km;
    - your flight was delayed by four or more hours and your destination is outside the EU at a distance exceeding 3500 km.

If your flight is delayed by five hours or more, you may demand the reimbursement of your ticket. However, your ticket will only be refunded if you decide not to travel.

  • My flight was cancelled, what do I do now?

If your flight was cancelled and you were not informed in the 14 days prior to your trip, you are entitled to financial compensation.

Similarly, you are entitled to compensation if you have not been re-booked for a flight departing at a time similar to that initially planned or if the airline cannot prove that the cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances.

  • My baggage was lost, is delayed or is damaged. Can I file a complaint?

Yes. You can file a complaint with your airline within 7 days from the date of delivery of the baggage, or 21 days if it has been delayed.

If the problems have occurred with your checked hold baggage (and unless they were caused by defects inherent to the baggage itself), you may be entitled to a compensation from the airline, up to a maximum amount of 1,220 euros.

If the problems affected your hand baggage (including personal items), the airline will only be liable if it is at the origin of the damages.

  • Are air passengers' rights protected outside the European Union?

Passenger rights apply to all flights departing from or landing at any airport in the European Union, or carried out by an airline based in an EU country or in Iceland, Norway or Switzerland.

  • Are passengers with reduced mobility also protected?

Yes, passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility are protected against discrimination and, under certain conditions, benefit from the appropriate assistance at all EU airports.

See our page on reduced mobility to learn more about the assistance provided.

  • Can I know which airline I will be flying with?

Yes. You have the right to know which airlineis operating you flight in advance.

Note that some airlines have been considered unsafe and have been banned from operating in the European Union or placed under restrictions. You can see a list of such companies in http://ec.europa.eu/transport/modes/air/safety/air-ban/index_en.htm

  • I bought my trip from a tour operator or travel agency. What should I know?

Tour operators are required to provide accurate information on the holiday packages sold, fulfil their contractual obligations and ensure protection for passengers in the event of insolvency of the organiser.

Baggage

Prepare your baggage properly

Travelling with liquids

Only essential items should go in your hand baggage

For security reasons, the transport of liquids in hand luggage is subject to quantity limits and specific packing rules. To avoid delays or inconvenience at security screening, please check in advance which liquids you may carry and how they should be presented.

The applicable rules may vary from one airport to another, so you should always check the specific information for your departure airport and for all airports you will pass through during your journey. For example, a passenger departing from an airport with more advanced rules and technology may be allowed to carry certain liquid items in their hand luggage which, on their return journey, may not be permitted at another airport with different rules or technology.

Please also note that liquids which cannot be carried in hand luggage may be placed in hold luggage, provided they are not prohibited items.

We are upgrading our technology and, soon, you will be able to benefit from a new experience at our airports.

  • Which items are considered liquids?

Liquids include all items containing liquids, aerosols and gels (LAG), that is, all the following products and those of similar consistency:

    - water and other drinks,
    - toothpaste,
    - lotions,
    - perfumes,
    - hair gel,
    - hair mousse and shaving foam,
    - creams,
    - pastes and pates,
    - jams and soft cheeses,
    - soups,
    - syrups.

  • How should I carry the liquids?

In containers with a maximum capacity of 100 ml (or 100 gr) per item, packaged in a single transparent 20x20-cm resealable bag (only one per passenger).

The golden rule is, therefore, to check in all liquid items over 100 ml.

  • What are the exceptions?

Liquid medications or special dietary products (including baby food – porridge, fruit jars, yoghurts and milk bottles) can travel outside the transparent plastic bag or in quantities exceeding 100 ml/100 g, for which it is advisable to bring a document or medical certificate attesting to the respective need.

Medication in tablet or powder form is not subject to the same restrictions applicable to liquids.

Liquid items purchased at the airport's duty-free shops, after the security checkpoint or on board the aircraft, are also permitted, provided they are in a sealed tamper-evident bag (supplied by duty-free shops) and accompanied by the respective purchase receipt.

  • How are liquids screened at security?

You must present all liquids at security screening:

If you are carrying liquids in containers of up to 100 ml, placed in a transparent plastic bag with a capacity of 1 litre (20 cm x 20 cm) per person, which can be opened and resealed, you must present them separately from the rest of your hand luggage at security screening.

If you are carrying liquids in containers with a capacity of more than 100 ml — such as medicines or special dietary products — you must also present them separately from the rest of your hand luggage for inspection.

If you are carrying liquid items purchased at the airport duty-free shops or on board the aircraft, do not open the sealed bag before reaching your destination. Otherwise, the products may not be accepted at subsequent security checks.

Please note that all liquids may be screened at any security checkpoint. However, they must always be presented visibly and in accordance with the applicable rules.

  • What should I do if I am carrying any forbidden or restricted item in my baggage?

In this situation, you can go back and hand the prohibited or restricted item to a family member or friend, check it in as hold baggage, if permitted, or send it by green mail, at the post located next to the security checkpoint.

Be prepared for Security Screening and avoid delays.

  • Why are containers with a capacity of more than 100 ml allowed at some European airports but not at others?

The applicable rules may vary between airports, depending on the screening equipment available and the security procedures in force at each location. For this reason, an item that is accepted at your departure airport may not be accepted at another airport, for example on your return journey.

Before travelling, always check the specific information for your departure airport and, where applicable, for all airports you will pass through during your journey.

  • What happens if I carry liquids in containers of more than 100 ml?

If you carry liquids in containers with a capacity of more than 100 ml, they may not be permitted through security screening, except in the cases provided for, such as medicines, baby food, products for special dietary needs or duty-free items purchased under the applicable conditions.

In these situations, you may have to place them in your hold luggage, send them by post or discard them at security screening.

To avoid delays or inconvenience, please check in advance the applicable rules at all airports you will pass through during your journey.

  • Can I carry tinned food?

Tinned food is subject to the rules applicable to liquids. Food products with liquid, paste-like or similar contents are treated as liquids at security screening. For this reason, it is recommended that these items be carried in hold luggage whenever possible.

In Portugal, tinned food with a total net weight of up to 150 grams may be carried in cabin baggage. Please check the rules here.

  • How should I carry medicines and baby food?

Medicines, baby food and milk may be carried in quantities of more than 100 ml when needed for the journey. These items must be presented separately from the rest of your hand luggage at security screening.

It is recommended that you carry only the quantity needed for your journey.
