Baggage

Prepare your baggage properly

Special and oversized baggage

Travelling with a bicycle, surfboard, diving equipment, golf clubs, musical instrument, big package or other large or unusual item?

Special or oversized baggage requires specific arrangements and may need to be handled separately from your regular checked baggage.

Before coming to Lisbon Airport, check with your airline and below advices. Airlines have their own rules regarding accepted items, maximum dimensions and weight, packaging, fees and advance reservation.

  • What is special or oversized baggage?

Your baggage may require special handling if it is:

    •    Large or bulky: for example, surfboards, bicycles, kayaks or other large equipment
    •    Long or unusually shaped: such as skis, fishing rods or sports equipment
    •    Heavy: above the normal weight allowance of your airline
    •    Fragile or delicate: such as certain musical instruments
    •    Not suitable for the standard baggage conveyor system*
    •    Mobility equipment: such as wheelchairs or other mobility aids
    •    An animal or pet travelling in accordance with your airline's requirements

    * "Not suitable for the standard baggage conveyor system” refers to an item that does not have the normal shape of a suitcase, such as round objects, usually wrapped in plastic.”

  • What to do before coming to the airport with my special luggage?

Your airline determines whether your item can be transported and under which conditions.

    •    Check your airline's rules
    •    Check whether your item needs prior approval
    •    Check maximum size/weight restrictions
    •    Check whether additional fees apply
    •    Prepare your baggage according to the airline's requirements
    •    Find out where to drop off your baggage at Lisbon Airport (add the precise location in each terminal/each airport)
    •    Allow extra time at the airport

  • What to do at Lisbon Airport with my special luggage?

    •    Go to your airline's check-in area and tell the airline agent before handing over your baggage.
    •    Your airline will tell you where to take the item within the airport
    •    Your baggage will be checked and handled separately if necessary
    •    Please don't leave your special baggage at a standard bag drop unless your airline tells you to do so.
    •    All good? Enjoy time at the airport!

What do I need to know

What you need to know when travelling

Travelling with plants

Some souvenirs may contain more than just memories: they may also carry pests that cause plant diseases!

Did you know that all plants and plant products, including cut flowers, must have a phytosanitary certificate to enter the EU legally?

Find out more here

  • Why does plant health matter?

Healthy plants are essential for our health, safe food and a healthy environment. Plants make up 80% of the food we eat, clean the air we breathe, and help combat climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide. They are also an important part of our diverse ecosystems, which include humans, animals and microorganisms.

    Healthy Plants = Healthy Lives.

  • What are ‘plant pests’?

Plant pests include harmful organisms like bacteria, viruses, fungi, nematodes, insects, and mites that damage plants. Some pests that are non-native organisms are known as ‘invasive alien species.’ They can disrupt ecosystems when introduced into new areas. These pests are often spread through global trade and can cause serious economic, environmental, and social harm.

  • Are there any regulations aimed at keeping plants healthy?

The EU ‘Plant Health’ law (Regulation (EU) 2024/3115) provides strict regulations to help protect plants and ensure a safe trade in plants.

In addition to this, the European Commission regularly updates a list of harmful plant organisms and emergency measures in place to manage the outbreaks of foreign or ‘quarantine pests’ from outside the EU (Regulation (EU) 2019/2072).

  • When we buy plants, how do we know they are pest-free?

Plants, seeds and other plant material imported from outside the EU should carry a phytosanitary certificate. This official document, which confirms that the pant is free from harmful organisms, is issued by a country’s National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) or third parties authorised by the NPPO.

For plants that imported and exported throughout the European Union, a plant passport is their guarantee of good health.

  • What can I do to help?

Raise awareness! Many people in the EU aren’t aware of the dangers posed by plant pests. Whether you're a home gardener, frequent traveller, or concerned parent, you can spread the word and make a difference.

Preventing pests from entering the EU is far easier and less expensive than eradicating them once they’re here.

Be a Plant Health Guardian. Protect plant health—and your own.

Here are some specific actions you can take:

    - Travel consciously. Don’t bring home plants, seeds, or fresh plant produce, such as fruits or veg from abroad. They could carry pests or diseases.

    - Buy responsibly: Only order plants or seeds online from trusted EU sources that provide a plant passport or certificate.

    - Check your plants: Look for unusual spots, pests, or signs of disease in your garden. If you can’t identify them, seek expert help.

    - Inspire others: Help children and your community understand why plant health matters.

    - Share the message: Talk about plant health online or with friends. Small actions can help stop big problems.
