Travelling with liquids

Only essential items should go in your hand baggage

For security reasons, the transport of liquids in hand luggage is subject to quantity limits and specific packing rules. To avoid delays or inconvenience at security screening, please check in advance which liquids you may carry and how they should be presented.

The applicable rules may vary from one airport to another, so you should always check the specific information for your departure airport and for all airports you will pass through during your journey. For example, a passenger departing from an airport with more advanced rules and technology may be allowed to carry certain liquid items in their hand luggage which, on their return journey, may not be permitted at another airport with different rules or technology.

Please also note that liquids which cannot be carried in hand luggage may be placed in hold luggage, provided they are not prohibited items.

We are upgrading our technology and, soon, you will be able to benefit from a new experience at our airports.

  • Which items are considered liquids?

Liquids include all items containing liquids, aerosols and gels (LAG), that is, all the following products and those of similar consistency:

    - water and other drinks,
    - toothpaste,
    - lotions,
    - perfumes,
    - hair gel,
    - hair mousse and shaving foam,
    - creams,
    - pastes and pates,
    - jams and soft cheeses,
    - soups,
    - syrups.

  • How should I carry the liquids?

In containers with a maximum capacity of 100 ml (or 100 gr) per item, packaged in a single transparent 20x20-cm resealable bag (only one per passenger).

The golden rule is, therefore, to check in all liquid items over 100 ml.

  • What are the exceptions?

Liquid medications or special dietary products (including baby food – porridge, fruit jars, yoghurts and milk bottles) can travel outside the transparent plastic bag or in quantities exceeding 100 ml/100 g, for which it is advisable to bring a document or medical certificate attesting to the respective need.

Medication in tablet or powder form is not subject to the same restrictions applicable to liquids.

Liquid items purchased at the airport's duty-free shops, after the security checkpoint or on board the aircraft, are also permitted, provided they are in a sealed tamper-evident bag (supplied by duty-free shops) and accompanied by the respective purchase receipt.

  • How are liquids screened at security?

You must present all liquids at security screening:

If you are carrying liquids in containers of up to 100 ml, placed in a transparent plastic bag with a capacity of 1 litre (20 cm x 20 cm) per person, which can be opened and resealed, you must present them separately from the rest of your hand luggage at security screening.

If you are carrying liquids in containers with a capacity of more than 100 ml — such as medicines or special dietary products — you must also present them separately from the rest of your hand luggage for inspection.

If you are carrying liquid items purchased at the airport duty-free shops or on board the aircraft, do not open the sealed bag before reaching your destination. Otherwise, the products may not be accepted at subsequent security checks.

Please note that all liquids may be screened at any security checkpoint. However, they must always be presented visibly and in accordance with the applicable rules.

  • What should I do if I am carrying any forbidden or restricted item in my baggage?

In this situation, you can go back and hand the prohibited or restricted item to a family member or friend, check it in as hold baggage, if permitted, or send it by green mail, at the post located next to the security checkpoint.

Be prepared for Security Screening and avoid delays.

  • Why are containers with a capacity of more than 100 ml allowed at some European airports but not at others?

The applicable rules may vary between airports, depending on the screening equipment available and the security procedures in force at each location. For this reason, an item that is accepted at your departure airport may not be accepted at another airport, for example on your return journey.

Before travelling, always check the specific information for your departure airport and, where applicable, for all airports you will pass through during your journey.

  • What happens if I carry liquids in containers of more than 100 ml?

If you carry liquids in containers with a capacity of more than 100 ml, they may not be permitted through security screening, except in the cases provided for, such as medicines, baby food, products for special dietary needs or duty-free items purchased under the applicable conditions.

In these situations, you may have to place them in your hold luggage, send them by post or discard them at security screening.

To avoid delays or inconvenience, please check in advance the applicable rules at all airports you will pass through during your journey.

  • Can I carry tinned food?

Tinned food is subject to the rules applicable to liquids. Food products with liquid, paste-like or similar contents are treated as liquids at security screening. For this reason, it is recommended that these items be carried in hold luggage whenever possible.

In Portugal, tinned food with a total net weight of up to 150 grams may be carried in cabin baggage. Please check the rules here.

  • How should I carry medicines and baby food?

Medicines, baby food and milk may be carried in quantities of more than 100 ml when needed for the journey. These items must be presented separately from the rest of your hand luggage at security screening.

It is recommended that you carry only the quantity needed for your journey.

Hold baggage

Check-in all baggage that you don't need to have with you

When travelling, your baggage should be stored in the hold. Although you can check-in anything you don't need to carry with you in the cabin, there are weight restrictions and other rules you should be aware of that apply to the transportation of specific items.

  • Is there a limit on hold baggage?

Yes. You should always contact your airline before travelling. Depending on your destination, airline and travel class, restrictions may vary regarding items you can or can't carry.

  • I am travelling with special baggage, what should I do?

When travelling with sports equipment, musical instruments, animals, or any other type of special or oversized baggage, you should contact your airline before travelling.

  • My baggage did not arrive or is damaged.

If your baggage was lost or damaged as a result of problems not caused by defects inherent to the baggage itself, you should file a complaint with your airline within 7 days from the date of delivery of the baggage, or 21 days if your baggage was delayed.

  • Are any items prohibited in hold baggage?

Yes. Because safety is a priority, passengers may not carry any explosive or incendiary materials or devices in the hold baggage.

You should also inquire as to whether any items that may not be carried in your hand baggage may be carried in the hold, as hold baggage is subject to much fewer restrictions. Learn more about what you may not carry on the Forbidden Items page.

Hand baggage

The less the better

Safety and comfort on board are the two main priorities in air travel. That's why rules concerning hand baggage are very clear: you should only carry essential items. Everything else must be placed in the hold. Be familiar with restrictions and know how to pack for your next trip.

  • How many bags can I carry as hand baggage?

In general, you may carry only a single item of baggage into the aircraft, which must respect weight and size restrictions.

It is advisable that you pack all the belongings you want to take with you on the plane on a single baggage item - personal effects, laptop or table, camera or other.

Because airlines may choose to store in the cargo hold any hand baggage that exceeds restrictions or fails to comply with safety regulations, you should contact your airline beforehand.

  • What are the size restrictions for hand baggage?

There are maximum weight and size restrictions, so you should check with your airline to find out which apply to your trip.

  • What can I and can't I carry on my hand baggage?

Your hand baggage should only contain items that are absolutely essential, such as personal items and documents, toiletries or any drugs you need to carry with you. Also note that some items may have to be transported in the hold.

To learn more about baggage restrictions and rules, as well as about what you are not allowed to carry, see the pages Forbidden Items and Information About Liquids.

  • Do I need special permission to carry insulin, needles, syringes and injection pens in my hand baggage?

No special statement to that effect is required. However, we recommend that passengers bring the respective medical certificate or other relevant documents certifying the need for such items during the trip, in order to facilitate and expedite the security screening.

Prohibited items

Safety first: These are the items you are not allowed to carry

At airports and in air travel, safety is always first. For your safety, and the safety of all passengers, some items are prohibited and not allowed into restricted areas of the airport or into the aircraft. Know what you are not allowed to carry and travel safely.

  • Are there any items that may not be carried in hand baggage?

Yes. Passengers are prohibited from carrying any type of weapon or tool, objects with sharp points or edges or substances classified as hazardous in restricted security areas and aboard the aircraft.

To learn what you are allowed to carry in your hand baggage, and how it must be packaged, please see our Information About Liquids page.

  • Which items are not permitted in hold baggage?

You may not transport any explosive and/or incendiary devices/materials/substances in hold baggage.

  • Which items are considered prohibited?

Among others, the following items are prohibited:

    - Pistols, firearms or any other devices that can shoot projectiles.

    - Metal or plastic toy guns/replicas, including water pistols.

    - Slingshots, darts or sports clubs or bats.

    - Objects with sharp points or edges, such as razors, knives, scissors and other objects with sharp blades over 6cm in length, syringes (except with medical prescription).

    - Work tools.

    - Fireworks, flammable liquids or solids.

    - Bleach, acids and poisons.

    - Objects containing compressed air or gas.

For more information, refer to the list of forbidden items available at the Portuguese Civil Aviation Authority website or contact your airline.

  • I am a smoker. May I carry cigarettes and a lighter?

Smoking in the plane and at the airport is absolutely forbidden. You may only smoke in designated areas. However, tobacco can be carried in your hand baggage.

At the security checkpoint, any lighters or electronic cigarettes being carried in the hand baggage must be inside an authorised transparent plastic bag.

Please note that you are not allowed to use electronic cigarettes aboard the aircraft.

  • What should I do if I am carrying any forbidden or restricted items in my baggage?

In this situation, you can go back and hand the prohibited or restricted item to a family member or friend, check it in as hold baggage, if permitted, or send it by green mail, at the post located next to the security checkpoint.

Check-in

Check-in: Know how to do it

Check-in is a mandatory procedure for all air travellers. It confirms the presence of the passenger and their baggage with the respective airline.
There are, however, several ways to check-in. See them here and choose the one that is most convenient for you.

For more information, contact your airline, your travel agent or call the ANA toll-free line, on 800 201 201.

  • How far in advance do I need to check-in?

The recommended check-in time varies depending on the flight. In order to avoid delays and make the most of your pre-boarding time, please respect your airline's minimum check-in time. Like that, you also avoid the risk of arriving after check-in closes.:

    At the Airport's check-in desk:

    - Schengen flights: 90 minutes

Schengen regulations have removed controls at the internal borders of signatory states: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Sweden, Switzerland.

    - Non-Schengen flights (Europe): 120 minutes

    - Flights to Third Countries (Intercontinental): 180 minutes

For most airlines, check-in can be made online 48 hours prior to boarding – check the recommended check-in time with your airline in advance.

Flights to the United States and Switzerland - 24 hours

Remember that, after checking in, you will have to go through X-ray screening and, when travelling to non-Schengen destinations, you must also go through passport control. Therefore, avoid delays and plan your arrival at the airport in advance.

  • Where do I check-in?

Because procedures can vary, we advise you to contact your airline before travelling, to find out which documents are needed and which check-in options are available.

However, for most cases, you can check-in through one of three ways: via the ANA APP on your smartphone, at the counters of the respective airlines at the airport, at the Self Check-In Kiosk, also at the airport, and also via the internet or smartphone.

  • How do I check-in at airline counters?

At the airport, go to the Check-In area.

Check the airport's information displays for your flight number and the corresponding check-in counter. To find yours, walk along the counter line and look at the identification displays, indicating the airline, destination and flight number.

  • How do I check-in using the internet or my smartphone?

To check-in comfortably download the ANA APP on your smartphone, where you’ll find the check-in option for several airlines.

You can also visit the airline's website and follow the instructions provided. Your check-in is complete when you receive your boarding pass via email, which must be presented whenever requested (either in electronic or printed form).

  • If I am travelling with hold luggage and I have checked-in online or using my mobile phone, how do I check in my baggage?

If you have baggage to check-in and you have checked in online or using your mobile phone, go to your airline's baggage drop-off counter and check-in your baggage. This way, you are ready to proceed directly to security control.

Passports and Visas

Make sure all your required documents are valid

If you are travelling abroad, you should confirm that you have all the necessary documents and that they are all valid. Here is all you need for a problem-free travel.

  • I am an EU citizen and I am travelling within the EU or the Schengen area.

Although European citizens are not required to present a national identity document or passport to cross the border between two countries within the Schengen area, it is recommended that you have your documents with you, as they may be requested at any time during your trip.

Please note that your driver's permit, bank cards and tax identification documents are not considered valid travel or identification documents.

  • I am travelling outside the European Union.

When travelling outside the European Union, into a country outside the Schengen area (Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Ireland or Romania) you are required to present your passport or a valid identity/citizen's card. In the United Kingdom it is mandatory to present a valid passport.

If, in turn, you are travelling to third countries, you must have a valid passport and, depending on your destination and the length of your stay, a visa may be required.

To find out which documents are needed, it is recommended that you contact the Embassy or Consulate of the destination country before travelling.

  • Which documents do I need to enter Portugal?

If you are a citizen of the European Union or the Schengen area, you must present a valid identification document, but you are not required to have a Passport or Visa.

Third-country nationals, even if they live in a Schengen area country, must always present their Passport. Depending on your country of origin and the length of your stay in Portugal, a valid Visa may also be required.

Security Screening

Cooperation is the fastest way to board

Because security is a priority, all passengers and crew must pass the security check. These procedures are mandatory, even if your flight is about to take off. So, be sure to arrive at the airport with enough time to ensure you learn what you need to make everything faster and more efficient.

At this airport, the usual rules for carrying liquids in hand luggage remain in force: containers of up to 100 ml must be placed in a transparent plastic bag with a maximum capacity of 1 litre per person and presented separately from your baggage at security screening. Failure to comply with these rules may increase your waiting time.

Please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions section below for further information. Should you have any questions, please contact us at  contactar@ana.pt

  • How should I prepare for security screening?

You can help speed up your passage through security screening by preparing in advance.

Use the trays provided for your personal belongings and follow these instructions:

    1.    Remove your laptop and/or other electronic devices from your hand luggage, where applicable. Please check the instructions at the screening equipment.

    2.    Empty your pockets of all items, such as coins, keys and mobile phones.

    3.    Place small or fragile items, such as sunglasses, watches and jewellery, inside your hand luggage.

    4.    Remove your coat and place it in a tray. If it is lightweight, such as a down jacket, we recommend placing it underneath your luggage, bag or backpack.

    5.    Declare and separate all liquids. Place the transparent plastic bag containing your liquids in the tray, outside your baggage and clearly visible. Check what you may carry here.

    6.    Remove your belt and/or shoes whenever instructed to do so by a security officer.

You must also ensure that you are not carrying any prohibited items

  • What is security screening?

Security screening is intended to check the items passengers are carrying with them, in their clothing and in their hand luggage.

This screening may include the passenger passing through a walk-through metal detector and/or a security scanner, as well as the screening of hand luggage using X-ray equipment.

Where necessary, passengers and their hand luggage may also be subject to Explosive Trace Detection (ETD) screening.

  • What is the explosive trace detector (ETD)?

It is a device that analyses nano-particles on a sample collected from the passenger or their baggage.

This type of screening may be requested randomly of any passenger at the security checkpoint, and does not replace any other procedure. It is a non-invasive screening, without any harmful effects for people, animals or transported goods.

  • What is the Walk-Through Metal Detector (WTMD)?

The WTMD is an equipment used at security screening to detect the presence of metal objects carried by passengers on their body or in their clothing.

Cash movement limits

Travelling with money? Know when you're required to declare it.

You are allowed to travel with any amount of money. However, if you are entering or leaving the European Union carrying an amount over 10,000 euros, or its equivalent in a different currency, you are under a legal obligation to declare it at Customs. Know the rules and always travel within the law.

  • What is the minimum amount that I am obliged to declare at Customs?

All passengers entering or leaving the European Union carrying an amount equal to or above 10,000 euros, or its equivalent in a different currency, in cash or convertible securities, such as bonds, shares or traveller's checks, must declare it at Customs.

Some EU Member States have implemented extraordinary control and reporting measures for the circulation of money within the EU. These will be implemented alongside the European regulations presented here.

  • Where do I declare cash or cash equivalents?

The declaration form, duly filled in, must be submitted at Customs, inside the airport, in the Arrivals area.

  • Why must I submit the declaration? And what happens if I don't?

Declaring cash or cash amounts equal to or greater than 10 thousand euros is a legal obligation for all passengers entering or leaving the European Union.

By doing so, you will not only be complying with European law, but you will also be contributing to combating money laundering and terrorist financing, as well as other illegal activities.

Moreover, declaring your valuables prevents you from having your money retained or seized, or from being subject to a penalty, which may happen in the event of a failure to declare or false declaration.

For more information on the restrictions imposed on the circulation of money within the European Union, visit ec.europa.eu/eucashcontrols .
