Passports and Visas

Make sure all your required documents are valid

If you are travelling abroad, you should confirm that you have all the necessary documents and that they are all valid. Here is all you need for a problem-free travel.

I am an EU citizen and I am travelling within the EU or the Schengen area.

Although European citizens are not required to present a national identity document or passport to cross the border between two countries within the Schengen area, it is recommended that you have your documents with you, as they may be requested at any time during your trip.

Please note that your driver's permit, bank cards and tax identification documents are not considered valid travel or identification documents.
I am travelling outside the European Union.

When travelling outside the European Union, into a country outside the Schengen area (Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Ireland or Romania) you are required to present your passport or a valid identity/citizen's card. In the United Kingdom it is mandatory to present a valid passport.

If, in turn, you are travelling to third countries, you must have a valid passport and, depending on your destination and the length of your stay, a visa may be required.

To find out which documents are needed, it is recommended that you contact the Embassy or Consulate of the destination country before travelling.
Which documents do I need to enter Portugal?

If you are a citizen of the European Union or the Schengen area, you must present a valid identification document, but you are not required to have a Passport or Visa.

Third-country nationals, even if they live in a Schengen area country, must always present their Passport. Depending on your country of origin and the length of your stay in Portugal, a valid Visa may also be required.

What do I need to know

What you need to know when travelling

Flight connections

Make the most of your connections

When your trip includes connecting flights, knowing what to do or how to make the most of your free time on the ground makes for a much more enjoyable trip. Here we give you all the information you need to make the most of your connections and have a good time while waiting for your next flight.

I am waiting for a connecting flight. What can I do?

When you have to wait for a connecting flight, it is important that you manage your time well. So, always save some time for procedural matters, as, depending on the flight, its origin and destination, you may have to go through security formalities and passport control all over again before boarding your next flight.

After that and until boarding, the airport offers many options to enjoy your time:

– A wide range of shops and restaurants with great deals;

– The ANA Lounge, a space dedicated to your well-being, where you can relax, do some work or even take a refreshing shower;

– A set of Family Services , which cater to all ages.

If there is a long waiting time before your scheduled departure, why not visit the city centre? Just rent a car or use the public transportation available at the airport. And don't worry about your baggage, we'll hold on to it for you.

I have a connecting flight with a single ticket and single check-in. What are the procedures to board the connecting flight?

This means you have a ticket for separate trips with the same airline or with different airlines, but with cooperation agreements regarding the processing of passengers and baggage between flights.

Therefore, you should enquire with the airline providing the first flight if your luggage will be automatically dispatched to your final destination, and confirm the procedures for boarding, which vary depending on the destination and origin:

CONNECTION	PROCEDURES FOR BOARDING A CONNECTING FLIGHT
I have arrived from a country outside the Schengen area and I am travelling to a country outside the Schengen area.	You must go through the security checkpoint.
I came from a country outside the Schengen area and I am travelling to a country inside the Schengen area.	You must go through the security checkpoint and passport control.
I have arrived from a Schengen country and I am travelling to a country outside the Schengen area.	You have to go through passport control.
I am travelling within the Schengen area or on a domestic flight.	No procedures are required. Just head to the boarding gate of your next flight.

Schengen area countries:
Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland.

I have a connecting flight with separate tickets. What are the procedures to board the connecting flight?

This happens when you purchase two separate tickets, or fly with two airlines with no cooperation agreements regarding the processing of passengers and baggage between flights.

In such cases there is no automatic forwarding of baggage and check-in is done separately for each flight, which means that:

– If you are travelling with hold baggage, you will have to pick it up at baggage claim, go through the Customs corridor, head to the check-in or drop-off counter of the airline with which you will be flying next, and proceed as if you were boarding for the first time, having to go through security control all over again.

– If you are travelling only with cabin baggage, you have to go through the Customs corridor, head to the check-in or drop-off counter of the airline with which you will be flying next, and proceed as if you were boarding for the first time, having to go through security control all over again.

At the Lisbon Airport, when you arrive at Terminal 1 and your second flight is with Eurowings, Norwegian, Ryanair, Transavia, Volotea, Vueling e Wizz Airr, you need to:

– Pick up your baggage, if any, and take the shuttle that takes you from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 – Departures.

VAT refund

Tax free: shopping before returning home? get VAT returned as well

Did you know that if you reside outside the European Union you are entitled to a refund of the VAT (Value Added Tax) paid on your purchases? Just request the tax free regime at stores and, on the day of departure, get everything taken care of at the airport. This way, you won't waste time with bureaucrac. You can fully enjoy your stay, as you only have to arrive at the airport a few minutes earlier to get everything ready in time for boarding.

Watch the video explaining the process to get the refund of your VAT.

Am I entitled to a VAT refund on any purchase?

No. VAT is only refundable on purchases that exceed a total of €50 per invoice (net of tax) and which are not being purchased for commercial purposes or for resale.

When you leave the European Union, you must be able to show that you are taking the goods with you in your personal baggage. This means that anything consumed here (such as hotel stays or meals in restaurants) or which you have already started using, does not qualify for a refund.

For more information, please read the leaflet from the Tax Authority.
Do I have to fill in any forms at the time of purchase?

No. Firstly, make sure that the shop participates in the tax refund scheme.

The sales assistant will ask you for your passport or other officially recognised and accepted document that proves you live outside the European Union, as well as asking you for some personal details.

When the transaction is complete, the sales assistant will give you your proof of purchase showing the respective registration code. Here, the form of the refund will be defined, if a guarantee has been provided.
What do I need to do at the airport?

To facilitate the verification process, we suggest that you put all of the goods into just one bag, if possible.

CHECKED BAGGAGE: Go to the check-in desk for your flight and tell the person on duty that you have items to declare. Next, go to an electronic terminal (kiosk), taking with you:

- Your passport or other identity document;

- Your boarding pass;

- The proof of purchase with registration code that you were given in the shop;

- The goods and corresponding invoices.

Follow the instructions at the kiosks, which will show:

Code Green: You can make your way to the handler's conveyor belt (Groundforce or Portway) or return to the check-in desk to check your bags. Next, go to the desk belonging to the VAT refund operator to receive your refund or put your validated form into one of the drums provided for the purpose.

Code Red: Go to the Customs desk.

HAND BAGGAGE: After going through security control, go to an electronic terminal (kiosk), taking with you:

- Your passport or other identity document;

- Your boarding pass;

- The proof of purchase with registration code that you were given in the shop;

- The goods and corresponding invoices.

Follow the instructions at the kiosks, which will show:

Code Green: Go to the desk belonging to the VAT refund operator to receive your refund or put your validated form into one of the drums provided for the purpose.

Code Red: You must go to the Customs desk.
How do I validate the forms at the electronic kiosks?

Hold your passport or identity document up to the kiosk's infra-red scanner. Next, scan your boarding pass.

The kiosk will show which tax-free forms are able to be validated. If you have any documents that are not able to be validated electronically, the kiosk will tell you to go to the desk.

Follow the instructions given at the kiosk and if you see Code Green, this means validation has been successful and you can go to one of the tax-free operators (indicated on your forms) to claim your refund. If you see Code Red, it means the conditions for exemption need to be verified and you must contact the Customs desk.

The person at the Customs desk will issue you with a certification of exemption, if applicable.

Watch the video explaining the process to get the refund of your VAT.
How do I receive the VAT return amount?

There are two ways to receive the refunded VAT paid on your purchases:

Immediate reimbursement – At the counter:
The refund operator will verify the validated form and process the payment, in cash, credit card or international cheque.

Retrospective reimbursement - Via the submission boxes:
The reimbursement operator collects the form from the submission box, verifies its validation and processes the payment via credit card or cheque (sent to your home address).
